Data, analytics, and applied AI

Hi, I'm Jeremy, a data scientist working across operational data, fiscal models, and applied AI.

These days I analyse statewide recycling-program data at CalRecycle in Sacramento, and I'm the founding data scientist at HerdSense, where we're building AI cameras that spot early signs of lameness in dairy cows. Before Sacramento it was credit union analytics in San Francisco and actuarial work at Allianz in London.

Right now

Current work at CalRecycle and HerdSense.

My week splits between two data problems. At CalRecycle I analyse statewide Beverage Container Recycling Program data, from fiscal impact estimates to the validation work that keeps public reporting defensible. At HerdSense I'm the founding data scientist, translating farm workflows into data requirements, validation logic, and product analytics for camera-based dairy cow lameness detection.

Whilst dairy cows and beverage containers have little in common, the work is similar: gathering requirements, validating messy source data, and explaining results to the people who make the decisions.

2024 - Present

I joined HerdSense as Founding Data Scientist in 2024. We build camera-based lameness detection for dairy farms, and my job is turning what happens on a farm into data requirements, validation plans, and product analytics, then coordinating the research that checks the detection actually works.

Current

Senior Data Specialist, CalRecycle

Sacramento, CA

Feb 2026 - Present

I joined CalRecycle in February 2026 to work on the Beverage Container Recycling Program. The program sits on a fund of roughly $1.5 billion, so the analysis behind recycling rates, accruals, and processing payments has to be traceable and defensible. I build the SQL, Access, Excel, and Power BI workflows that make it so, run the container sales and redemption forecasting behind fund planning, and answer the fiscal and Public Records Act questions that come with public data.

Data science

Data Scientist, San Francisco Fire Credit Union

San Francisco, CA

Aug 2024 - Aug 2025

At SF Fire Credit Union I applied analytics directly to business growth and member experience. I rebuilt funnel reporting for new account openings, moved attribution from first-touch to multi-touch tracking, and built the dashboards in Looker and Power BI that carried insights to executives. The deposit-application funnel work helped cut processing time by 19%.

Actuarial analytics

Actuarial Analyst, Allianz

London, United Kingdom

Aug 2023 - Aug 2024

In the actuarial team I focused on premium risk modelling, liability reserving, and portfolio work for property and engineering lines. I became responsible for the firm's monthly Claims Tracking Report, coding in R and SAS, and built cash-flow models that fed into quarterly presentations to Allianz Group in Germany. I also supported the transition from IFRS 4 to IFRS 17, helping align models with global standards.

Underwriting

Technical Underwriting Analyst, Allianz

London, United Kingdom

Sep 2022 - Aug 2023

I joined Allianz's graduate programme in London, starting in technical underwriting. I dug into the customer journey across motor, home, and travel products, built dashboards in Power BI to make complex data simple, and presented pricing insights to senior managers and the Underwriting Committee.

Having grown up in a numbers-oriented family (both my parents studied engineering to master's level), I read Actuarial Science at the University of Kent, spent two years at Allianz in London, and completed my M.S. in Business Analytics at UC Davis in August 2025.
